Story Inside a Sioux Tipi

Images inside a buffalo hide tipiStory Inside a Sioux Tipi

16 x 20” Framed Oil Painting on Canvas

Symbolically, images from Plains Indians winter counts were juxtaposed into the heights of the teepee in this painting, to inspire the thought of the narrative manner in which culture was passed along before recorded history.

Recently returning to the Black Hills area, I have been busily promoting my art this past month. This original painting along with many artworks I have created will be on display at the newly opened Rim Rock Lodge Gallery in Spearfish Canyon from June 30 – 22.

The Skirmish

Native American Battle“The Skirmish”

24 x 36” Oil on Canvas

Tales told of skirmishes past are hinted at in this painting. The imagery of U. S. Calvary soldiers being pursued by a Native Americans is inspired by the Ewers Ledger. The original artist of the ledger was a Northern Cheyenne, incarcerated in a fort in Montana Circa 1870 – 1880.  The Ewers Ledger is named after the Calvary officer whose descendants inherited it.

The intensity of the battle is conveyed in the original ledger art, by a border of flying bullets, and bullets scattered amongst the two figures. The application of texture and energy to the painting adds to the sense of drama and motion which the scene being depicted inspired. Horses entangled, soldiers dismounted and injured, and the chaos of a mighty skirmish is depicted in the painting.  All images told and re-told long after the battle’s conclusion.

Running Wild

Wild Horses imagery“Running Wild”

24 x 36” Oil on Panel

The shelter of a tipi is a symbol from the past, reminiscent of a nomadic way of life. A life in which mankind lived off of the land and in harmony with nature.

Using juxtaposed imagery on the inside of a tipi, I have rendered horses living in the wild.  Their nomadic lifestyle of freedom and living off of the land inspires the same romantic ideal of living in peace and harmony.  A time gone by, yet longed for innately.

Red… a power color and one I am increasingly drawn to!  Painting with red…

What do you long for innately?  For me, it is art.  I am happiest when I am doing my artwork, and secondary is showing it… it is mostly about the DOING it!

Rend in Time

“Rend in Time”

13 x 20” Oil on Canvas

Tales told of days gone by.  The stampeding bison herds of yesterday very nearly became extinct, as their way of life did?  A purposeful tear in the canvas of this painting illustrates the passing of time and the sting of history.

It was a near loss of a majestic creature due to a host of political reasons and lifestyle changes… Is it a whole lot different today?  Are we equally nostalgic of the threatened species and recently extinct creatures due to mankind’s same selfish pursuits?

I have been re-read reading Barbara Kingsolver’s book, High Tide in Tucson .  She has a chapter entitled “In the Belly of the Beast” in which she describes her visit to a Titan Missile  Silo just south of Tucson.  Reading this, and in light of the escalating unrest in our world, can we really believe mankind will have the sense to control the violence in which we live?  Can we stop short of becoming extinct along with the rest of the living creatures on this earth that we should be protecting instead of threatening?
