Value is a Fluid Concept

24 x 36” Watercolor and Ink on Clayboard

This complex artwork symbolizes the mystique behind valuation and barter. Value is forever changing; what something is worth is always determined by as few as two people: what more than one person is willing to pay…

This painting will be on display at the upcoming Artists of the Black Hills annual show at The Dahl Arts Center in Rapid City.

Circling the Globe

“Circling the Globe” 6 x 6” Watercolor and Ink on Clayboard

Glass trade beads made in one part of the world circumnavigate it many times over, changing hands as a form of currency and connection.

6 x 6” Watercolor on Clayboard

The profusion of colored glass in this painting is more than the sum of its parts.

As you can see, I work in a series: I initially explored beads as subject matter years ago, and then about four years back, I revisited the subject matter, this time with a new medium, and I have yet to feel I have exhausted the ideas I wish to explore!

Hanks of Beads Submerged

Hanks of Beads Submerged 11x14 WC on Clayboard 2014

“Hanks of Beads Submerged”

11 x 14” Watercolor on Clayboard

Trades beads, as a form of global currency, have circled the globe. They have been lost and they have been found.

I am drawn to trade beads as subject matter: they have much world history.  A hank of beads is a long strand of one type of bead.  Hanks are frequently broken apart and re-strung to create something new: as in life.

I’ve taken a little time away from blogging, not from painting.  I have been working on a PhD in Art Education at the University of Arizona in Tucson! Go Wildcats!
