Plein Air Painting in Historic Deadwood, SD

The Lead/Deadwood Arts Council hosted a plein air painting event this past week in Deadwood.  The theme was fittingly, historic Deadwood.  This old town has world-wide fame, and is only 12 miles from my home, so it was a given I would don my cowboy hat and head over!  There are many old buildings which have been beautifully preserved, thanks to the Deadwood Historic Preservation Trust.  This is financed by the legalized gambling allowed in the city of Deadwood.  It all makes for fun: come visit if you get a chance!  It is amazing!

Seth Bullock owned this hotel, and it is reported that people have seen his ghost in the hallways… (?)

The Start of the Painting: Roughing in the composition

Happy with the vertical composition, I roughed in the dark values. and prepared to add the many Victorian details of the building.
